As we headed back to the vehicles I couldn’t help pondering if the Preacher would die of agonizing thirst or be ripped apart being devoured while still alive. April still somewhat covered in blood and gore was lingering behind the rest of us a bit, lost in her own thoughts. She wasn’t paying attention and tripped on a pothole in the road. She went down banging up her knee pretty badly. Dan was intentionally holding back a bit waiting for her to catch up, but giving her space to contemplate her own thoughts. He heard her cry out in pain immediately turning around. A Fallen missing her right arm and a chunk of its torso lumbered out of the darkness attracted to the sound. It was literally standing over April a moment after Dan had turned. April covered her mouth while holding her breathe. Dan grabbed for his gun. The thing completely ignored April like she was invisible, but the movement from Dan caught its attention. It hobbled forward towards him with its teeth bared. A broken ankle slowed it down enough for Dan to get a good aim putting a bullet in its left eye. After it dropped to the ground he rushed forward to help April up from the street. She was having some difficulty walking due to injuring her knee. Without warning Dan lifted her off of her feet carrying her to catch up with the rest of us who had turned around after the silenced gunshot.

Having all the fun we could handle for one night, we loaded up making a quick stop at Hollinger just long enough to grab our supplies. As much as April smelled like rotted flesh and blood during the trip back to the airport no one commented unkindly. We all knew that for some reason that it was probably what saved her life according to what Dan saw transpire. It was useful information to have for the future if we ever needed it.

It was still dark out when we arrived back at the airport. It would probably be another three hours before the sun would start to rise. Most of us crashed immediately into a deep slumber. April stayed up to wash herself off. Dan patiently waited until she was finished so that he could tend to her knee. He helped her to her bed before retiring himself. When we awoke we were all so relieved that we could finally put all of this behind us that we took the day off. We relaxed while reading, playing cards, talking, and having a few alcoholic drinks to celebrate. Aurora and I went together to release Kate from her holding room. After explaining to her what had happened at the church, we gave her the choice of becoming part of the group despite her initial dishonesty. She made the choice to leave, feeling that she did not deserve the kindness we offered. As much as Aurora tried to talk her out of her decision it didn’t help.
